In a last ditch effort to defend its shrinking frontiers, Germany called upon every able bodied man between the ages of 16 and 60 to be organized into the Volkssturm, literally “People’s Storm”, in late 1944. A 6 million man home guard, the Volkssturm was comprised mostly of old men and young boys, equipped in an ad hoc fashion with captured foreign arms, training and hunting rifles, one shot throw away anti-tank weapons, and hurriedly produced service rifles and SMGs. Volkssturm weapons have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading W. Darrin Weaver to write an authoritative reference book on the subject in 2005.
